think. first, forget the fiscal cliff, because the economy is coming back. americans are feeling more optimistic about 2013 and if we play our cards right, we're going to see a new economic renaissance. td ameritrade recently surveyed folks on their outlook for the new year. 43% say they're downright optimistic about the economy and believe we're headed for a rebound. 45% are feeling good about their own finances, but we already know that things are starting to get better. look, we're adding jobs every month, consumer debt continues to shrink. stock markets are up. longer term, though. america will reap the rewards of its domestic energy boom and more oil and gas gets extracted. the drop in the price of natural gas is already helping utilities and factories compete. that's creating more american jobs. and there is more. housing will be the golden lining to the economic cloud that is hanging over this country. mortgage rates are at historic low and should stay that way for the next two years but home prices have seen their bottom and are heading back up. when they do, confidence goes u

tonight and that storm will bring rain to new england tomorrow. >>> we have more on the fiscal cliff talks. >> reporter: it's 23 days since the fiscal cliff deadline. it's 23 days since they met face-to-face to talk about how to avert it. this was a surprised meeting. nobody spotted boehner coming or going. nobody is saying much beyond two statements. the wording here is identical ending with this, the lines of communication remain open. the two men last spoke by phone on wednesday. on friday mr. boehner said the white house wasted another week for potential compromise. we don't know what prompted this meeting. for a first time in a while the two sides are agreeing on something even if it's the wording of their statement an keeping fight lipped. >> thank you. in today's meetings, is it a sign we're close to a fiscal cliff deal. i asked the senior cnn analyst, david gergen. >> this week is a crucial week to see if they can get a break through. in fact, they are willing to sit down and they did it in private, and instead of the political theater we have seen in the last few weeks i think tha

president obama and speaker boehner, is it a sign we're close to a fiscal cliff deal? i asked cnn senior political analyst david gergen. >> they recognize the deadlines are coming at them fast and this week is a crucial week to see if they can get a breakthrough. they did it in private instead of the political theater we've been seeing is over the last couple weeks. i think that's encouraging. don, we should be patient here. there's even a bigger long-term issue and that is whether the kind of agreement they could reach now will lead to a grand bargain or whether it will lead to a mouse instead of an elephant. we don't know that yet. we'll have to wait and see how what they can craft this week and see indeed if they can get past the fiscal cliff. that's point one. in some ways, don, what's at stake here is whether they can craft a deal that's win/win. that each side can walk away from something in the short term saying we're encouraged, this gives us greater reason to go on and engage in the grand bargain next year. this is a moment, don, when a lot of things are hanging in the balance.

comes along, and we proverbially fall off the fiscal cliff. where will we feel it first? >> it's one thing after another. first thing is the payroll tax holiday. right away the first week you would have less money in your paycheck. people like alicia immediately would lose that check, and there's going to be 2 million people at the end of december who would lose their checks and another million by the end of the first quarter who would lose their checks according to the national employment law project. and your tax rates could go up for everyone. you could pay a higher tax rate, and guys like jeffrey sheninger have to figure out how to change that when you get paid by your company. >> effectively on january 1st we start to feel it if your employer can get their software changed. whether you see it on your check or not, it's going to be there ultimately at some point. bad news and very interesting news at the same time. >> i love her outlook about next year, though. even alicia has a promising outlook on next year. she thinks it will look better, and that is what carries her through.

the fiscal cliff or do you think that judging from your seeing what this meeting behind closed doors now and as time comes down to the end that they will come up with a deal at the 11th hour? >> well, look, there's always that possibility that you know, they could go over the fiscal cliff, but you're right in pointing out that this is how it usually plays out is that everyone voicing optimism at the start. then there's a lot of rhetoric that's thrown around. both sides getting sort of dug in positions and then you start to get sort of this air of compromise. what we're sensing now is that there does appear to be this willingness on both sides to compromise. you hear democrats talking about entitlements, willing to back down on entitlements, and then some republicans talking about you know, some kind of increase in taxes for wealthy americans and so, that really is a starting point where both sides have been digging in now for weeks and the hope is that this, there could be some real movement this week. get this wrapped up before the fiscal cliff scenario plays out. >> all right, dan loth

, 27 days until the fiscal cliff. and i know you know that already, but guess what, folks? the deadline for congress and the white house to act, to stop the tax increase and punishing spending cuts, that deadline is coming up quicker than you may realize because did you know, congress plans to end its current session on december 21st? check your calendar as we did today. that's two weeks from friday. that means that under congressional rules any agreement, any legislation to fix this whole mess would have to be filed here by december 28th. here's the kicker. the president currently plans to leave town the day before that, on the 17th of this month. so the yearly obama trip to hawaii is set to start a week from next monday. you feel me here? see where i'm going? the window closing faster than folks think. what are our decisionmakers doing right now? among other things they are apparently sending signals through the media. republicans saying time to get moving. the president saying there is a deal to be had fairly quickly if the republicans come around to raising taxes on the wealthy. let
